Walk On By

Another shot from Sefton Park in Liverpool:

Sefton Park, Liverpool, Merseyside, England

Off to Tuscany tomorrow for a week of R&R and no doubt some great photo opportunities. It’s felt like a long few months for one reason or another……and I really need this break. I’ve scheduled some posts for while I’m away though, just to keep things ticking-over.

Arrivederci. A dopo.

Another Place

Antony Gormley’sAnother Place (a collection of 100 cast-iron statues that look out across Liverpool Bay towards the Irish Sea) is a truly surreal modern art installation that spreads out over a 2 mile stretch of Crosby beach, just north of Liverpool.

There is something about “Another Place” that I find both fascinating and disturbing in equal measure. I’ve been there three times now and on each occasion I’ve had a slightly uneasy feeling, but I’ve never quite been able to put my finger on why. Perhaps it’s something to do with the fact that the statues are life-size and are cast replicas of the sculptor’s own body. It’s certainly not hard for my, at times, overactive imagination to see these iron men come alive and stride across the landscape like some sci-fi inspired mechanical army.

One thing is for sure they do make great subjects for photography.

I took these shots earlier in the year handheld with my trusty 15-85mm lens and I have to say that I’m quite pleased with them. I think the decision to covert to mono, push the contrast and add vignettes has worked well to produce a set of four moody and atmospheric images.
