The Hawa Mahal or “Palace of the Winds” forms part of the east wall of the City Palace of Jaipur. It was built in 1799 to allow the ladies of the harem to watch processions in the street below, without themselves being seen by curious onlookers from outside the palace:

Next door to the City Palace is the Jaipur Observatory, built between 1728 and 1734. Its Hindu name is the Jantar Mantar and it contains a series of monumental instruments for “….measuring the harmony of the heavens.” The scale of this place is astonishing, with each instrument serving a particular function and still delivering accurate readings after nearly three hundred years:

The sandstone “pink city” of Jaipur, capital of Rajasthan, was founded in 1727 by Maharaja Jai Singh II. At its centre sits the City Palace (built between 1728 and 1732) surrounded by its impressive high wall;
