Chatsworth

Chatsworth House stands a few miles northeast of Bakewell on the banks of the river Derwent in the heart of the Derbyshire Peak District. Due to its location and architectural magnificence it is affectionately known as “The Palace of the Peaks”.

It has been home to the Cavendish family for nearly 500 years and is the country seat of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire.

We visited Chatsworth for Mum’s birthday back in August 2012 and it must be the third or fourth time I’ve been during my lifetime – it never fails to impress.

One of the true highlights is the stunning collection of sculptures – particularly the truly remarkable “Veiled Vestal Virgin” by Raffaelle Monti (1818-1881) with its almost translucent marble carving of the veil itself…..the photograph above really doesn’t do it justice.

Incidentally the “Roman Foot” (which dates to the first or second century BC) is assumed to be part of a colossal statue of a Greek goddess which would have stood approximately 11m tall.
