Commended

As per usual I entered one of my images into “The Williamson Open Art & Photography Exhibition” – an annual exhibition held at the Williamson Art Gallery and Museum on the Wirral. This time though I was pleasantly surprised to receive a “commended” award from the judging panel. This is the photograph I entered, it’s a shot of Scarista Bay on the Isle of Harris in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides:

The Wirral Open Art & Photography Exhibition 2015

Thought I would share with you the two photographs of mine that have been accepted into the Wirral Open Exhibition held at the Williamson Art Gallery in Birkenhead between 10th April and 10th May 2015. Both of these images have been posted before, although I did re-process them in preparation for printing for the exhibition.

Lead In Lines

The Digital Lightroom

With the theme for the 5th DLR Photography Competition, we’re focusing very much on composition.  In my opinion, composition should be at the heart of every image we take but here we’re concentrating on just one, very effective aspect, lead in lines.  Composition is what makes the image work and the viewing experience pleasurable.

Lead in lines (or leading lines) are lines, or shapes, colours or even textures that are positioned (composed) in such a way that they lead the viewer’s eye into and around the image.

The image below is of the Echo Building in Liverpool.  The extreme use of lines in this image drags the viewer into the picture; the handrail drawing from bottom right to the middle of the image, complimented by the brick path and textured wall all following the same curves into the picture.  Then the eye is drawn up into the picture by the…

The 5th DLR Photography Competition – Lead in Lines

The Digital Lightroom

50px Spacer

We put our heads together here in the Digital Lightroom, thought long and hard and came up with a theme for the 5th DLR Photography Competition that will not only produce some fabulous entries we’re sure, but will focus your attention on a very effective compositional technique.

If the idea of lead in lines is all new to you, we will be publishing an article describing the technique in the coming days.

I’m always on the lookout for lead in lines in my photography.  The lines left by the mower when the hay was cut in the field next to my house this week giving me the perfect opportunity to make use of some lead in lines to show you as an example. These lines draw you into the picture and give greater depth to the image.  The line created by the surf on the beach, a hedge, fence or…

The Polls Are Open

The Digital Lightroom

These are the 10 shortlisted pictures in the DLR Urban Landscape Photography Competition once again.  The response has been brilliant.  It just gets better and better and harder and harder to choose just 10 images from all those entered.  You now have the even tougher job to choose just one image from the 10 excellent photographs listed below.

A quick note, this competition was started because we wanted to celebrate the excellent photography we see on a daily basis here at WordPress.  We didn’t want the competition to be about the blog or the blogger, a popularity contest in other words.  We want the competition to be purely about the photographs and we hope that you will vote with this ideal in mind.

The Photographs are listed in no particular order, post your vote carefully.
