The huge expanse of Uig Sands on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides. It was somewhere in this area that the world-famous medieval Lewis Chessmen were found in the 19th Century.
I had totally forgotten about them, although they are an important part of medieval cultural history (and I am an art historian)! And of course back then I never thought about wondering where they were from. So this comes as a fascinating surprise.

Beautiful landscapes Mark and interesting to see the beautiful chess pieces found there.
I didn’t know that about the chess. Very interesting!
I’d seen the Lewis Chessman in Edinburgh and in the British Museum previously, so it was great to see where they were found 😊
