Stromness is the second largest settlement and the main port on the Orkney Isles. It is a proper sea-faring town, full of “salty” character, narrow streets and solid stone buildings that look as though they could withstand anything the wind, rain and sea could throw at them…..which is just as well..;0).

Imagining the whalers, fishermen and smugglers singing sea-shanties in the local drinking-dens after a long hard voyage at sea is really not that difficult – there is something romantic about Stromness…..though I suspect the reality was somewhat more harsh, cold and dangerous:

As you can see I’m still wading through my photos from our two-week trip to Orkney in May. I reckon I’m about half way through the posts I had planned, and although it’s taking longer than I had hoped (mainly due to the day job getting in the way) I really want to finish sharing the Orkney shots before I move on to posting any other/new images.
